It’s the Season of Thanks-Taking

By Boot Recruit Myra

It’s a cacophony of activity as crowds are at their high point, clamoring for a parking space,  the sounds of cash registers rolling as change flies in and out of the drawer, and the lines, oh the lines!  Everyone is grabbing for their “piece of the pie”.  Sound familiar?  I’m not talking about your holiday grocery store visit or the security line at the airport, or even those 3am sales on Black Friday!

Line for Butterbeer at Universal Studios

I’m talking about the lines to get in to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter experience at Universal Studios!  Our family makes this trek every couple years because it’s historically the lowest attending days of the year.  This year however, things are ginormously different.  With the debut of the new Harry Potter section, all records are broken!  And while you are reading this webilogue the park is already closed to capacity with people waiting 8 hours in line just for one single 4 minute ride!  The turkey isn’t even in the oven yet!  At one point I wondered  “how long do people wait in this crazy line before giving up?”   Truly, the answer is never!  Is it worth it?  You bet!  As I scan the crowds in my new Boot Campaign t-shirt I am suddenly overwhelmed by one single thought:

there are men and women who died so I can take my freedom to the ultimate by enjoying  some extreme “out of this world” entertainment.

Sometimes I think a better word for this holiday would be Thankstaking.  After all, we do take a lot don’t we?  In the midst of all we enjoy during the holidays, it’s critical to remember our freedom to indulge in fun and food cost someone something. There are hundreds of thousands of active duty service men and women who won’t be eating a meal or exchanging gifts with their families this entire holiday season. That should make us take pause and be thankful.  Erin Asmom said it perfectly well when she opened her boots back in October:

…just opening the box brought tears to my eyes. It felt like I released thousands of troops’ voices whispering “Worry not, we have your back”. God Bless the USA and our troops.

The Boot Girls are especially thankful these days .  In just 5 short months wearing boots in support of troops has taken off across America!   A round of applause to fans and growing number of celebrities showing their support!  Because of their gratitude, the Boot Girls are on the way to accomplishing their mission of selling a million pairs of “give back” combat boots.  Proceeds from boot sales go toward support of returning wounded warriors through multiple established charities.  Check out some of the most recent milestones:

  • Over 17,000 combined Fans of The Boot Campaign and When They Come Back Facebook pages bringing awareness of the need to support troops.
  • Over 2400 followers on Twitter
  • Initial first-round proceeds donated to the USO for their supporting charities.
  • Donated $30,000 to Wounded Wear through the Lone Survivor Foundation, providing specialty clothing for wounded veterans this Christmas.

Whether you have Boots On! or not, sometime this holiday season thank a soldier or ten!  You may be in line at the grocery store, waiting for security at the airport, or enjoying the most popular themed ride of the decade when your opportunity for ThanksGIVING will present itself for the taking!
