This year marks the 235th anniversary of American Independence. So how will you spend the summer celebrating the country you call home? Will you travel or stay put? Will you turn off the oven in the house and move to outdoors and become the grill master? Did you buy a pair of flip flops to roam the local flea market? You might take a tour of a local winery, or do my ultimate favorite thing in the world; either drive the PCH in California or along the James River in Virginia, discovering glimpses of America in every way imaginable.
There is so much to love about where we live. Regardless of how you feel about politics or the state of our economy, think for a moment of our 235 year history and marvel that we live in relative peace with each other today, even when we don’t always agree or get along. It’s easy to get wrapped up in what you don’t like; we’re all very good at that to be sure. But something about summer makes me forget what I don’t like, take a deep breath and focus on what I love about living in a place where freedom is a value we all possess.
Take time to celebrate your America this summer. You are what make this country as wonderful as it is and it is YOURS to celebrate. At the same time, do something to celebrate your freedom and remember more intentionally those who work to afford you this amazing privilege. You could invite a family in your neighborhood whose son or daughter are deployed to your home and serve them some of your grilling masterpieces. Write a letter to someone serving in our armed forces, appreciating their sacrifice of lazy summer days, so we can continue to enjoy ours. Or you could attend a ceremony in your city where new Americans take their oath of citizenship. It might be as simple as telling your children what America means to you. You could go online and listen to all four songs from each branch of the military to get your patriotic engine revved up! I know on June 27, I plan to wear my boots in honor of a local pastor’s son who enters into military training becoming the next group of defenders of the home I love.
Whatever you do this summer, at some point make the time to celebrate your freedom and your America. If you’re lacking for ideas check our new Events calendar on the web! Be sure to drop me a line, and include a photo. You never know, you might become part of the Boot Campaign Summer Vacation Album!
